Summary: Interior of Motte and Bailey
Key dates:
Inside the motte and bailey was usually a two roomed house made of timber and plaster. There may also have been an attic. The people had built these mainly for protection and there were few luxuries. Lighting was provided from candleabra and wall sconces which held torches or candles. Furniture was made from fairly rough wood and cooking was done over an open fire using cooking pots often suspended over this on an iron bar.
