Summary: Alehouses and Taverns

Alehouses and taverns were common in all the larger towns. Coffee houses began to be popular in the late 17th century. These were visited by people of leisure with little else to do and by businessmen who often transacted deals there. The Dublin Philosophical Society held its meetings for its first ten years in a coffee house. Book selling also took place in these houses. In 1695 the new Tholsel was built in Cork, one part of this was a bookshop and the other part became Lucas’s Coffee House
