Summary: Sites of Religious or Social Importance
Key dates:
Tara was the most prestigious of all ritual sites and it was also the location for the inauguration of the High Kings. The so called Banqueting Hall was rectangular in shape and may originally have been an open tribal area of assembly on a hilltop. This site appears to have been a sacred spot. Roman artefacts have been found there.
Tara parallels closely Navan Fort and even Beaghmore Stone circles as important meeting places.
At Tara, every three years, a great festival of music (feis) was held under the direction of the High King.
