Summary: Towns
Key dates:
The Anglo Normans established towns throughout all the areas which they colonised. Most of these were in the south and east of the country and often were on the same sites as the earlier Viking towns. One of the earliest of the new Norman towns was Drogheda which was the site of a ford. Other new towns have still that novelty in their names such as New Ross, Newtown Trim and Newtownards. These towns were usually defended by walls and entered through gates such as St Laurence’s in Drogheda.
