Summary: Tara and Assemblies
Key dates:
Ireland was divided into provincial kingdoms known as tuatha. Each one was ruled by a king or Ri chosen at an assembly by the men of the kingdom. The most important assembly was held at Tara. Here laws were passed and other official business carried out. There was also entertainment and games with minstrels, timpanists and jugglers common. They were joined by harpists, bards and satirists. The famous story telling tradition was the forerunner of the manuscript.
