Summary: Examples of Food
Key dates:
These people ate dairy products in summer and bread, beef and porridge in winter. They also had much pork and salt bacon. Those who lived near rivers and the coast supplemented their diet with fish, especially salmon. Trout and shellfish were also eaten. Bees were kept by some farmers and therefore honey was available. The bones of deer, wild geese and wild duck have been found at these early sites. Leeks, dulse and other vegetables were eaten, as were nuts, apples and wild berries.
Meat was boiled in cauldrons which were either bronze or iron. Sometimes it was roasted on a spit over an open fire. Much cooking was done outdoors and the open pit cooking of the fulacht fiadh was still used.
