Summary: Bronze Age Vessels and Utensils

Key dates:

Cooking was done over open fires which were either outside or in the centre of the house with an opening in the roof through which the smoke could exit. These people were also farmers and had developed a rotary quern so that grain could be ground for flour. Mortars and pestles were used to grind down herbs and berries. Pygmy cups were common food vessels in the Bronze Age period. Their design originated in Spain and Portugal, while some were also found in Wessex. Wooden bowls were used for carrying foodstuffs and water. While the new metal of bronze had been developed, it was not widely used in the early period for commonplace items.
