Summary: Jewellery
Key dates:
In this period considerable skill in metal-working was visible in the very ornate jewellery which survives. The Tara Brooch is made of cast silver with gold filigree and amber ornaments on the front. The Vikings brought with them a Scandinavian style of workmanship and this is evident in the pieces which have been found in Dublin. Two gold bracelets were found under the threshold of a house in Dublin and amber beads were found in the excavations at Christchurch, Dublin. Amber was available in Ireland before the Vikings but became much more abundant as a result of Viking trade.
