Summary: Outer Garments

Key dates:

These people wore many different furs; otter, badger, seal and fox were used in the early Christian period. Marten (a kind of weasel) skins were exported in the 10th and 11th centuries. Leather was important and, in 941 AD, each member of the army of Muirchertach got a leather cloak. A leather cloak covered with otter skins was found at Derrykeighan, Co Antrim. This weighed less than one kilo and its edges were hemmed. Similar cloaks have been found in Denmark where they were worn fur side in as a waterproof.
