Summary: Examples of Good Sewing/Tailoring
Key dates:
The dress in the picture was found in a bog in Moy, Co Clare. It was made from coarsely woven twill or wool with a low round neck, buttoned centre front bodice and tight sleeves buttoned to underarm. The skirt was double gored at centre back and at each side.
This dress is a good example of excellent sewing techniques. Selvedges were used where possible and all seams were neatly finished. There was a gusset at the front of each armpit for ease of movement and comfort.
Good tailoring had developed and Dublin tailors got a charter in May 1418 and they were allowed to establish a guild. Other specialist crafts developed as well such as glovers and shoemakers. Weavers and drapers had a special place in society.
