Summary: Changes over the Period

Key dates:

The tunic or leine evolved over the centuries and became much more decorated for the wealthy. Embroidery was prominent at the neck, cuffs and on the skirt. The brats became much more manageable in size and shape. For both male and female a new tunic emerged. This was called a ionar and was worn over the leine, leaving a little of the undergarment visible. From the early 9th century, women had head veils. Aristocratic men were either clean shaven or had both beards and moustaches. Soldiers and lower classes had long moustaches and no beards.
