Summary: Williamite Settlement
Key dates:
The period of the Williamite Wars saw many changes in Ireland. When the wars ended and the Penal Laws were introduced, Catholic land ownership was seriously reduced. As a result many Catholics found that, if they wanted to keep their faith, they were banished to the poorest areas.
At this time also many Continental soldiers who had fought for William settled in the northern part of Ireland and many of them helped to start the linen industry there.
