Summary: Ulster Plantation
Key dates:
From 1594 a rebellion had raged in Ulster led by Hugh O’Neill and this was known as the Nine Year’s War. O’Neill agreed to peace terms at Mellifont in 1603 before he knew that Elizabeth had died. The new king, James I, however was not pleased with the warring Irish and with his Lord Deputy, Sir Arthur Chicester, he planned to plant Ulster counties with loyal English and Scotsmen. These planters came from about 1610, following a major survey of the land the previous year. They brought with them new farming methods and, more importantly, the Protestant religion.
