Summary: Vikings

Key dates:

The Viking raids ended the great days of Irish missionary journeys. The Viking people came from Norway and Denmark to settle in the British Isles. They arrived in Ireland in 795AD and, for the first forty years of the 9th century, they carried out many raids on the northern half of Ireland. They were responsible for the first Irish towns, the most impressive of which was Dublin. In 902 the Dublin Vikings were expelled and their fortress destroyed. Most of the inhabitants migrated to north west England. They returned in force in 917 and re-established settlements.
