Summary: Early Norman Invaders
Key dates:
The Normans came to England from northern France in a flotilla of ships which landed at Pevensey in October 1066. The Battle of Hastings followed and very soon the Norman conquest was complete. William the Conqueror was crowned King on Christmas day 1066.
Just over a century later some Norman lords came to Ireland and established their rule here. As they had done in England, castles were built all over the country. Bottom right is an illustration of the Bayeux Tapestry showing Harold as he comes to Normandy to inform William he is the successor of King Edward. It was designed and constructed soon after the battle in 1066. It was made to celebrate and record for posterity the events leading up to the battle and its aftermath.
