Summary: Missionary Journeys
Key dates:
The early medieval period was one when there were many missionary journeys. The Irish missionaries travelled first to Scotland and established many religious settlements there such as the Iona Community. From there St Aiden went on to found the religious community at Lindisfarne. The Irish had already established links with the west of Scotland in an area which they called Dalriada.
The missionaries travelled much further afield and established centres all over Europe: Columbanus at Luxeuil, St Gaul in Switzerland, St Kilian in Germany and St Fiachra in France.
