When a Norman, John Comyn, was appointed Archbishop of Dublin, he quarrelled with the city corporation so much that he decided to build a second cathedral outside the jurisdiction of the corporation. This was to become St Patrick’s Cathedral, situated down the hill from Christ Church and outside the then city walls.
