As the people did not understand the causes of the Black Death, their cures were not very successful. Some shut themselves away; some carried a mask of herbs; some hoped for the best and others beat themselves. These were called flagellants.
As a result of the Black Death, the population fell dramatically and there was a shortage of workers. When peasants realised this, they demanded higher wages.
