Summary: Pilgrimages

Key dates:

Going on a pilgrimage to a holy site was an exciting venture for anyone who could afford to do so. In Ireland, many pilgrimages were made to Lough Derg where St Patrick’s Island was believed to be the entrance to Purgatory. Holy Cross in Co Tipperary got its name because people believed that Christ’s cross was there and so it attracted many pilgrims. Some went on pilgrimages to clear their conscience, others for cures while some just enjoyed the outings. Most could collect badges to show that they had been to such a holy site.
