Summary: Cromwell

Key dates:

After the English Civil War ended, Oliver Cromwell ruled the country in his strict Puritan ways. Cromwell hated the Roman Catholics and showed no mercy to any priests who were captured during the Cromwellian campaign in Ireland. Many of the priests were deported after 1654. Some priests went into hiding or wandered about the country in disguise. A £5 reward was offered to anyone who delivered a priest for transportation to remote areas such as Innisboffin or the Aran islands.
