Summary: Plan of monastery
Key dates:
With few variations, most monasteries were built to a similar plan. They all had a church at the centre. There were cloisters where monks could relax and walk. The vestry housed the clerical clothes or vestments. A chapter of the rules was read every day in the chapter house. The parlour was where talking took place ( from French parler to talk). The day room was for indoor activities and the refectory was the dining room. Sleeping took place in the dormitory. The kitchen, infirmary and bakehouse were detatched from the main building.
