The most important religious order in Ireland was the Cistercian order. They were founded in France and were to be found in Ireland at Mellifont Abbey and at Inch Abbey which is near Downpatrick. They kept sheep and wore habits of undyed wool so they were nicknamed the white monks. John de Courcy founded Inch Abbey and his wife, Affreca, founded Grey Abbey.
All monks entering a monastery had to take three vows:
·Of obedience
·Of poverty
·Of chastity
