Summary: Standing Stones and Stone Circles

The most famous of the impressive stone circles of this period is Stonehenge. However there are many Irish examples and one of the most important areas for these is in Mid-Ulster. The best example is the collection of seven circles at Beaghmore near Cookstown, Co Tyrone. At Beaghmore there are also ten rows of stones and about twelve small cairns covering an area of 5 acres.
The way in which these were built indicates that a high degree of organisation was required. The existence of such elaborate monuments indicates some unknown ritual related to the dead.
