Summary: Architecture
Key dates:
Sir William Robinson designed the Royal Hospital at Kilmainham for disabled soldiers. This was the brainchild of the Duke of Ormonde who was Viceroy. It was founded in 1679 and was inspired by Les Invalides in Paris. Its classical features were a clear departure from any previous buildings in Ireland.
In 1729 work began on the Edward Lovett Pearce’s Dublin Parliament building. This building is now the Bank of Ireland opposite Trinity College Dublin.
Pearce was also responsible for supervising the building of Castletown House in Co Kildare. This began in 1722 for James Connolly, Speaker of the Irish Parliament. It is well known for the amazing stucco work inside which was done by the Italian brothers, the Francinis.
