Some well known artists of the period.
Thomas Bate painted on glass and his portrait of Lord Coningsby is in the Ulster Museum, Belfast. Near the end of the 17th century the English artist Francis Place (1647-1728) visited Ireland and did a number of topographical drawings. This was the first of many tours undertaken by English artists.
Charles Jervas (1675-1739) was the leading Irish artist of the period. He produced about a dozen versions or copies of Swift’s portrait. He began his work in London and then went to Italy.
The first artist of major ability working in all Ireland was James Latham (1696-1747). He was born in Tipperary and settled as a portrait painter in Dublin by the 1720s. His best known work is of George Berkeley which hangs in TCD.
Between 1730 and 1750 there developed an important school of engravers in Dublin. These were led by John Brooks, assisted by Andrew Miller.
