Summary: St John’s Crucifixion Plaque

Key dates:

St John’s Crucifixion Plaque dates from the late 7th century and is an example of monastic art of the period. It is very different in style from the Ardagh Chalice and the Tara brooch. The central figure is Christ with arms outstretched and nailed to the cross. It also has many unusual spirals and zigzags as well as a combination of cross and circle. This decoration is not found elsewhere and this suggests that this plaque may have decorated a shrine or book cover.
