Summary: Portraits
Key dates:
Society was not sufficiently rich and settled until well into the 18th century for the sort of decorative art which existed in England. Even portraits were mainly the work of anonymous or forgotten artists. However one artist does deserve mention; Garrett Morphey (1680-1716). He was a prolific portrait painter, a Roman Catholic, and was originally known for his painting of the Irish martyr, Oliver Plunkett. There are fine examples of his work in Malahide Castle, north Co Dublin. His paintings are useful because they record the connection between the Irish Jacobite family of Sir Neale O’Neill and the Molyneaux family.
