Summary: Book of Durrow
Key dates:
In the 7th century at the monastery at Durrow, Co Offaly, Saint Columba is credited with writing the Book of Durrow which is now in Trinity College Dublin. This manuscript is smaller than most other Irish illuminated manuscripts and has a limited range of colours. Strong red, bright yellow and dark green predominate and the outline now appears brown, although it was probably originally black. The text is in Latin Vulgate, with initial letters shaded by the use of dots.
