Summary: Shelling Hills
Key dates:
This photograph was taken at the beginning of the 19th century, but it records a skill used by farmers a century earlier. You can see the sacks of corn that had been carried to this windy location. When the threshed corn was tossed in the air, the grain fell onto the cloth which had been spread on the ground. The process was known as shelling and sites like this one in Donegal were often known as Shelling Hills.
