Key dates:
The rapid growth of Belfast in the early part of the 19th century contributed to the spread of disease in the poor conditions. Belfast was then hit by a major cholera epidemic in 1832-33. Many poor people died and their bodies were dumped in this “cholera pit” which was known locally as Plaguey Hill.
