Summary: Examples of art in bronze and iron ages

Key dates:

Some beautiful items were made in gold, bronze or stone by these early craftsmen. It is quite possible that many of these items had religious ceremonial uses. In some places gold or bronze objects were thrown into lakes or rivers in order to please the gods. Stone sculptures were common and were mainly for religious ritual or use. Celtic art came from the continent from about the 5th century BC until the 1st century BC. This is known as La Tene art. It has many oriental sources and Mediterranean plant designs are common. The principal metals used are gold, bronze and, occasionally, silver; sometimes coral or glass was added. Much of these La Tene artefacts came from the upper strata of society.
